November 29, 2010 Update!

2010 UT System Physical Activity Challenge: Final Results

As for the challenge, every institution was a winner. We were able to get non-active employees to become active and also, create awareness of resources and programs available to our members (employees, retirees and dependents). So thank you all again, without your support this would have not happened.

Now we do have to crown a winner for our 2010 institution challenge. This institution did an excellent job promoting the program with the involvement of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management Wellness Coordinator--"Rowdy New U", HR/Benefits and Wellness Champions. Our 2010 Annual UT System Physical Activity Challenge is UT San Antonio. Congratulations!

We will be working with UT San Antonio to schedule a date to make the official presentation of the 2010 Annual UT System Physical Activity Challenge Traveling Trophy to UT San Antonio .

Interesting Things Around the World and their Distances:
We had 1,148 participants, 896 of those completed the challenge which is 82.7% completion rate and collectively our total step count was: 91,156,508! 
What does this number represent?  Well below we have listed a few interesting facts:

  • Did you know that 10,000 steps equals 5 mile!
  • Based on the current number of steps, we have completed the Tour de France total distance
    21 times (TdF = 4,220,000 steps or ~2,110 miles)
  • We have also hiked the Grand Canyon 164 times (GC= 554,000 steps or 277 miles); and finally
  • We have walked the Great Wall of China 12 times (GWC= 7,456,195 steps or ~3728 miles).

When individuals set personalized goals that match their needs, they’re more likely to initiate and maintain change. Because most Americans get little physical activity, setting ambitious initial goals, like walking 10,000 steps a day or following severely restricted diets, can be too daunting. America on the Move (AOM) finds the small steps approach with starting goals of an extra 2000 steps and 100 fewer calories per day are more doable.  Incremental goals enable individuals to set their own pace, which in turn builds confidence to do more over time. AOM focuses on the importance of the balance between energy expenditure and calorie intake to successfully prevent weight gain.

Also, you will be competing against all UT System Institutions. The Institutions with the greatest participations (based on % of total headcount) and improvement (based on % of improvement) will win the “America On the Move UT System Ultimate Challenge Traveling Trophy”.

JOIN TODAY

Follow the steps below to join the Challenge today!

  1. Go to the AOM website at www.americaonthemove.org, sign-up for a free account if you don’t have an account, if you have an account just log in.
  2. Once you have logged-in, on the top search engine, type “University of Texas” and select “2010 University of Texas System Physical Activity Challenge”.
  3. Once you’re on the “2010 University of Texas System Physical Activity Challenge” page click on the “Join” option on the top right side on the screen. Once you have joined the group, you can then join a “Sub-Group” (your institution).

This online, 6-week physical activity challenge will start on October 6th to November 17th.
